Digni-tree on display

In recognition of Dignity Action Day (1 February), Hoople Training has created a Digni-tree from ‘leaves’ submitted by Herefordshire care providers.
The carers were asked to respond to the question:
What do you do to support staff in promoting dignity
in your establishment/ service.
A number of important themes were identified, including:
- Ensure dignity is promoted at all times, not just on Dignity Action Day
- Have designated ‘Dignity Champions’ within the workplace
- Ensure sufficient staff training
- Adherence to the ‘Ten point dignity challenge’.
Contributors included Martha Trust, Field Farm House, Herefordshire Care Homes, Old Court Barn, Affinity Trust, Aspire Living, First Key Scope, Mobile Care and Domestic Services, West Bank Nursing and Care Home (Ross on Wye) and Winslow Court (Bromyard), amongst others.
Two free seminars were also offered by Hoople on Dignity Action Day to care providers. Attendees discussed the ‘Ten point dignity challenge’ and the use of an audit tool that could identify gaps in practice and knowledge.
The Digni-tree will stay in place at Hoople’s Training Centre for the whole of the month of February and will be used as a teaching aid with learners who are studying for a qualification in the health and social care sector.
Ali Chambers, Senior Manager, Workplace Learning and Support Services at Hoople, said: “We are very pleased to have received so many leaves for our Digni-tree. This reflects the importance Herefordshire carers place on ensuring dignity for their clients throughout the year. The leaves are also useful and inspiring for all of our learners as they start their careers in health and social care.”
The Ten point dignity challenge
The ‘Ten point dignity challenge’ describes values and actions that high quality services that respect people's dignity should demonstrate:
- Have a zero tolerance of all forms of abuse
- Support people with the same respect you would want for yourself or a member of your family
- Treat each person as an individual by offering a personalised service
- Enable people to maintain the maximum possible level of independence, choice and control
- Listen and support people to express their needs and wants
- Respect people's right to privacy
- Ensure people feel able to complain without fear of retribution
- Engage with family members and carers as care partners
- Assist people to maintain confidence and positive self-esteem
- Act to alleviate people's loneliness and isolation
