The role of the Finance Officer is to support the Academy’s Business Manager in the financial management of the Robert Owen Academy (the Academy) and the Robert Owen Academies Trust (the Trust)



  • Advising academy leaders, governors and trustees on school financial regulations and audit requirements in line with Education Funding Agency (EFA)
  • Preparing figures to assist the Business Manager in the preparation of the annual and three year projected  budget;
  • Preparing figures to assist the Business Manager with EFA returns e.g. Budget Forecast Return and Annual Accounts Return to EFA;
  • Running year end reports in preparation for annual accounts and audit;
  • Supporting the Business Manager in using benchmarking data to assess trends and success;
  • Adhering to and advising on the development of the academy’s financial policy and procedures;
  • Monitoring expenditure and income against the budget;
  • Monitoring both the Academy’s and the Trusts bank accounts and preparing cash flow reports;
  • Processing on-line BACS payments
  • Advising budget holders on their accounts by the production of reports;
  • Oversight of petty cash;
  • Working with service providers to procure value for money resources;
  • To prepare general ledger and cash book journals;
  • Producing monthly VAT returns (126 reports);
  • Preparing bank reconciliations
  • Preparing monthly income and expenditure reports for Governors & Trustees;
  • Advising on budget virement and making transactions when approved;
  • Preparation of payroll information and production of pension returns
  • To ensure the financial services manual is updated annually, or as changes to process occur and to ensure the academy leaders are made aware of any changes in financial regulations to ensure full compliance.
  • Compliance with Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information Act in all aspects of this role.


  • To cover reception as and when required
  • Any other duties as may arise as directed by the Business Manager or Principal as to ensure the smooth operation of the Academy.



  • Accountancy and/or school business management qualification;
  • Sound working knowledge of Academy Financial Management systems and reporting requirements;
  • Fully conversant with FMS
  • Previous experience of SAGE would be an advantage
