STRONG YOUNG MINDS WELLBEING ADVISOR

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Strong Young Mind’s Vision

  • Strong Young Minds (a project within The CLD Trust) works with children and young people up to the age of 26.  The vision of Strong Young Minds is that every child and young person in Herefordshire receives the support they need to sustain their emotional health.

Strong Young Minds is committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. All our work is informed by this commitment.

Your Role

To help us achieve this vision, you will be responsible for:

  • Working individually with children and young people, based on an initial assessment of their needs by a qualified counsellor.
  • Developing rapport with children and young people who may find it hard to have trust in adults. Linked with this, helping children and young people with transitions will be a key part of your role, including supporting the move from primary school to secondary school and the transition from adolescence to early adulthood.
  • Delivering interventions that help to support the emotional wellbeing of children and young people. This may include addressing issues related explicitly to mental health – such as anxiety and low mood – but may also include general advice and coaching, such as support with job or course applications, or using public transport.
  • Advocating on behalf of our children and young people with other services, such as schools, social care, or housing.
  • Forming positive relationships with parents and others who are important to children and young people.
  • Providing clear and timely written records in relation to your work, using the Strong Young Minds database to store this information securely and then producing summary reports as requested to review and evaluate your work. This may include reports for midpoint reviews and closure reports to sustain the progress made by children and young people.
  • Supporting youth work provision around the county, providing informed advice and support regarding emotional health for young people when they access this type of provision.
  • Supporting our programme of participation and volunteering in Strong Young Minds.
  • Complying with any assessments of risk that the service requires.
  • Attending and supporting profile-raising events that Strong Young Minds delivers as part of its mission to promote positive emotional health.

To fulfil this role, you will have:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the mental health challenges facing children and young people in Herefordshire today.
  • Experience of working directly with children or young people.
  • A willingness to work within the BACP Counselling Skills competence framework, including an understanding of professional context, empathy, skills, and techniques, and developing a working alliance with children and young people.
  • A Level 2 qualification in Counselling, or a willingness to work towards achieving this qualification within two years.
  • A commitment to working within safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Experience of working one-to-one with children and young people and an understanding of how to keep safe when lone working.
  • The ability and willingness to work in an inclusive and non-discriminatory way in relation to, for example, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexuality, religion, and neurodiversity.
  • The ability to work to an agreed plan, providing a responsive and reliable service that meets agreed goals.
  • The ability to speak up for children and young people. Although Strong Young Minds is not an advocacy service, you will need to be able to advocate for some of the young people you work with when required.
  • A working knowledge of computers, including the ability to input reports and data to provide evidence of your work.
  • A willingness to work creatively with children and young people who may require patience, tenacity, and flexibility if you are to make progress. This may require you to work in a range of settings in the community, such as community farms or youth groups, and to work closely alongside other charities.
  • A willingness to schedule and plan appointments with children and young people, including sending and responding to emails and messages in a timely way, acting on your initiative when required.
  • The ability to seek out support and advice if new information or risks come to light that require careful assessment and review by a qualified counsellor or manager.
  • The ability to provide emotionally supportive relationships to children and young people while still maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • A commitment to your own ongoing professional development.
  • A willingness to work flexibly in terms of the location and the time of work. We will not be unreasonable in our expectations, and we will take your own caring responsibilities into account carefully, but a willingness to work into the evening and in various locations is required for this role.

Supervisory and Case Management Arrangements

Regular case management, which involves monitoring your case work and youth work, will be provided by the Programme Co-ordinator. Reflective supervision will be provided by one of the clinical managers at the CLD Trust, the umbrella organisation for Strong Young Minds.
